Thirteen Moon Calendar

I found some ceramic disks when demolishing the electrical room. Thirteen of them.

I brought them home, cleaned them up, and covered each with images from the Thirteen Moon Calendar. It's a spinning disk toy for my granddaughter Zara.


Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Thirteen Moon Calendar has 13 28 day cycles. It covers 364 days in a year. The missing day is called the "Day Out Of Time," which is dedicated to rest and recreation.


In making this piece I worried that Zara's upbringing might be too Gregorian in nature. I wanted her to have an alternative to chew on...
