Fatherhood

I just came home from the Panther’s game.

Three boys, some touchdowns, a sack or two, and a day in the car.

I don’t follow football.

I have no TV.

And who wins or loses could not be of lesser consequence to me.

But it matters to my son.

He knows all the teams.

He knows all the stats.

So I take him to the game.

I would do anything to connect with him.

And that is hard.

It won’t be music.

Or gardening.

Or cooking.

Or building.

It won’t be sustainability.

Or biodiesel.

Or solar.

Or wind.

But it might be football.

Or sports.

Or fashion.

Or popular culture.

I don’t excel at any of them.

So I buy tickets to the game

And drive them all to see it.

No need to be a poet

When you have a son
